     On New Road Projects

Through European Aid and other funding, the land-locked country of Burundi has begun to implement a massive road building and rehabilitation programme. Immediately after the civil war, the EU gave over €100 million in aid.

For rehabilitation of RN 12 trunk road linking Gitega, Karusi and Muyinga, the EU gave €24 million. This was for a 104 km stretch of road to to be upgraded and asphalted, thus ending the isolation of an estimated 10% of the population of the country. The project will aim at reducing rural poverty in the three provinces of which the three cities to be linked are the main urban centres.

The European Community see the road schemes as vital to aid the development of one of the world's poorest countries. The population is almost 9 million. Another €15.5 million was given for rehabilitation and upgrading of urban roads in Bujumbura, a project covering more than 40 km of urban roads providing access to areas of economic activity and the city centre. It also financed the building of a bypass, which, in the long term, will relieve congestion in the centre by enabling heavy-goods vehicles in transit to avoid the city.

Today, several contracts, under the auspices of the National Road Agency, are well advanced, the largest being the construction of the 92 km RN 12 Gitega–Karuzi–Muyinga trunk road. Within Burundi, roads with RN classification are sealed bitumen or gravel. Altogether, inter-city roads total 5,211 km of which 3,625 km are paved.

However, the redevelopment programme is much greater. There is an estimated 42,000 km in the city of Bujumbura alone to be rehabilitated. The city's infrastructure was seriously damaged during the long civil war, which ravaged the land between 1993 and 2005.
