Club Historian Fiona Linday updates on her mission to record the history of the Lighthouse Club…

“Following our appeal for memorabilia and paperwork I’ve begun cataloging the items at National Office. What a treasure trove; old newsletters, dinner menus, ties, photographs and an impressive collection of silverware, including the silver salver presented to Eddie Ward for 15 years service to the Club and The Eddie Ward ‘Clanger’ donated by Mercantile Credit on our 25th Anniversary.

I’ve started sorting through photographs and with the help of Martin Roddy and Mike Cummings have matched many names to faces. I do worry that individual branch histories may be lost if past key figures are not remembered.

I’m calling on more senior members to come forward with stories about how their branch was founded. These important details mustn’t be lost; the foundations laid in the past are part of our future.

Please contact the National Office before clearing away old Lighthouse Club paraphernalia. You may have the only record of something the Club may treasure. We’ll photograph and return any items of sentimental value”.

Our Asia Pacific Branch laid on a ‘sterling’ celebration in Hong Kong to celebrate their Silver Anniversary. Les Leslie reports…

“When Eddie Ward and his colleagues formed the Lighthouse Club back in 1956 I doubt they imagined we’d be celebrating our 25-year milestone in Asia 55 years later. But that’s exactly what happened. In June we held our two day "Caring Construction, Collaborative Contracting" International Conference at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Construction professionals from Hong Kong, China, Philippines and U.K. spoke on a wide range of topics to over 300 delegates. Speakers included the Secretary of

Development of the Hong Kong Government, Mrs. Carrie Lam and our President Douglas Oakervee CBE, FREng. The Conference raised HK$1 million for the Lighthouse Club Asia Pacific Region Benevolent Trust and The James Battersby Educational Trust

The Celebrations were rounded off with an Anniversary Ball which began with a rousing performance by the Hong Kong Police pipes and drums band. Ronan Collins and Glenn Haley gave a presentation highlighting 25 years of Hong Kong Branch activities, concentrating of course on the light-hearted moments. Then after a sumptuous dinner everyone enjoyed dancing into the early hours.

And a Golden

Anniversary Extravaganza

On Thursday 15th September the Lighthouse Club Nederland celebrated their 50th Anniversary at Slot Zeist in Zeist, The Netherlands. The day's programme included a Grand Opening Ceremony followed by workshops, networking and presentations. The celebrations concluded with an Anniversary Dinner. A full report of this celebration will follow in the next issue.

A Blast From The Past…

Jennifer – Inspiration and Ambassador

Over the last few issues we’ve got to know Jennifer Deeney well. We’re delighted to announce she has agreed to take on the official role of Lighthouse Club Fundraising Ambassador.

Chairman Steve Barnett reports “Few people know more than Jennifer how accidents at work can devastate lives and we’re thrilled to have her on board in this official capacity. Her knowledge, passion and drive make her a valuable addition to our team.

Since her beloved Kieron died in an accident on a construction site in 2004 just 13 weeks

after their wedding she has been determined to ensure his death will make a difference and dedicates huge amounts of time to improving industry safety and making sure support is available for families affected by accidents. Since becoming involved with our Club in 2010 she’s made a remarkable impact; her abilities as a speaker are such that she can touch the emotions of anyone listening. She’s attended numerous events including last year’s Annual Dinner. She’s also launched the Deeney Fund which has raised close to £200,000 to date.

Jennifer is an inspirational figure and we’re very fortunate to have her”.
