55th Annual Dinner is a Sell Out…

“Our industry might be struggling through tough economic times, but The Ballroom at Grosvenor House was packed with over 475 guests keen to support our charity and enjoy sumptuous food, fne wine and sparkling conversation.

As tradition demands we kicked off with Heads & Tails before our ‘oldest’ member Mr Jimmy Cook kindly gave grace.

Chairman, Steve Barnett thanked the organisers and invited our new President Douglas Oakervee CBE to make the presentations. The Cox Lighthouse Trophy was awarded to our North East branch for increasing their membership by an astonishing 150%. Mark Everett thanked Paul Duggan, Branch Chairman and the newly appointed committee, especially Speedy for working tirelessly to reinvigorate our founding branch. The ‘Capel Cup’ for ‘Outstanding Fundraising’

was presented to Sean Byrne of the Byrne Group; the company had donated £153,403 earlier in the year.

Our guests watched a touching flm of a lady who had received help from us when her husband died, then Fundraising Ambassador Jennifer Deeney made a personal appeal to the industry leaders present to support ‘their’ Club. When Master of Ceremonies, Brian Greenan asked

everyone to ‘dig deep’ donations in the ‘Gift Aid’ envelopes had increased by a fantastic 40% on last year.

After a superb dinner, the main speeches began. President, Douglas Oakervee CBE stressed the need for support from not only individual members but from corporate sponsors. Special guest speaker Mr John

Armitt CBE FREng delivered a powerful address on industry safety and the ‘Yes We Can’ attitude prevailing in the Construction Industry.

Finally TV Celebrity Rory Bremner had the audience in stitches with his observations on life & his impressions.

A splendid atmosphere prevailed throughout the evening, proof that

even in diffcult times generosity, fun and fellowship continues to be found in abundance at Lighthouse Club events.

Special thanks to Arcelor Mittal & The Workers Guild our main sponsors for the evening.
