A new ‘Sign’ in the sky

The ‘Sign!’, a new, 20-storey office building with a transparent glass front and business club in the top floor, will soon act as a distinctive landmark in the Dusseldorf media-city harbour-skyline. The modern design by the architect Helmut Jahn is a slender, elegant form with separated stairs and lifts which virtually lean upon the body of the building.

The contractor is FRANKONIA Eurobau AG.

Alimak Hek is providing equipment and logistical support for the transport of men and material to the full 76 m height of the structure.

Two Alimak Scando II 450 20/30 FC construction hoists are installed. The fully modular hoists system makes for speedy, safe transport of men and material up and down.

Due to the individual requirements of the Dusseldorf project both hoist cars have been installed on one mast - this is one of the key features of the modular system which allows for a wide range of variations.

The two hoists have carry payloads up to 2,000 kg per cage with speeds up to 54 m per minute using the proven rack and pinion technology of Alimak Hek. An alternative to the double-cage Scando-installation used for the “Sign!” is to use a single Alimak Scando 450 This also applies for the larger Scando 650 which, depending on design, can reach speeds up to 65 metres per minute and carries up to 3.2 t.

TWS watercart for Macarthur Station upgrade

J.A. Bradshaw Civil Construction has dry hired a 4,500 litre capacity watercart from TWS Hire for dust control and base compaction works at its construction site at Macarthur in Sydney’s south western suburbs.

The Macarthur Station Upgrade and Interchange project involves the construction of a fourth platform at Macarthur Station, an easy access upgrade including new lifts, a bus/rail interchange adjacent to the station and a new 450 space commuter car park.

The project involves landscaping along the western boundary of the car park and associated road works to provide access to the new car park.

The watercart is also being used for road works on Menangle that involve the construction of a roundabout and a footpath. Work commenced in December last year and is due for completion in December 2010.

Dust control procedures and water needed for moisture content for base stabilization is being provided by a compact 4,500 litre capacity water truck from TWS Hire and driven by Bradshaw’s personnel as needed.

“Water availability on demand is essential to keep the earthworks on schedule. By using water trucks that can be operated by anyone with a car licence, we can use our site personnel to deliver the water immediately it is needed. As well as this flexibility, cost is reduced by eliminating the need for a specially licensed operator if using a larger vehicle”, Russell said.
