QATAR: 8km long development, Doha

8km long development, Doha

Try to image a building complex comprising residential, commercial and retail units that stretches for more than 8 km.

That is what contractors are working on south of the city of Doha in Qatar.

The Barwa Commercial Avenue Project is subdivided into 5 sections with different low-rise building types, typically 4 storeys with 1 parking basement level.

Being built on what is close to a turnkey contract, the client is Barwa Real Estate Company which is made up of private investors and the State of Qatar which retains a 45% share. Valued at in excess of US$1,000 million, it is the largest single contract in the history of HOCHTIEF Construction AG.

QATAR: 8km long development, DohaWork started in February 2008 and is scheduled for completion by June 2012. At this time, over 60% of the structural works are finished which included 270,000 m³ of concrete. Work is now underway on the facade, MEP and finishing works.

With work progressing on various sections simultaneously, planning and engineering logistics are very demanding. There are over 6,700 people on site - 600 responsible for management.

When completed, Barwa Commercial Avenue will be a centre for retail, office and residential units. It is being built alongside the highway at Doha‘s southern fringe and will comprise almost 900,000 m² of gross floor space - the equivalent of roughly 110 soccer pitches.

QATAR: 8km long development, Doha    During the planning, HOCHTIEF employed innovative virtual construction technology.

The subsidiary, HOCHTIEF ViCon, developed a customized, complex 3D model of the shopping centre and on this basis calculated the precise quantities of required construction materials. In addition, modern Internet-based communication tools such as iRooms are used for project support.

Another HOCHTIEF Construction subsidiary, Streif Baulogistik, delivers formwork to the BCA construction site. [CW]
