Another Case 721B for demanding waste-to-energy centreItaly
Another Case for demanding waste-to-energy centre

A2A, one of the leading multi-utilities companies in Europe and the national leader in the environmental field in Italy, having handled 3 million tonnes of waste.

The company has five large waste to energy plants including an innovative plant in Bergamo with specific needs for material handling in restricted areas. A critical piece of equipment is a Case 721B wheel loader in which the company invested.

A second wheel loader was required due to the need to improve handling of material originating from separate collection streams (wood, vegetable, packaging and plastic).

Following an initial examination to determine the most productive and efficient material handling solution, the Case loader was bought and has been a part of the plant vehicle fleet for some years.

Now, the A2A central purchasing department decided to purchase a second Case loader, the new 721F. In addition to the model’s proven reliability, the low emissions of the new Tier IV interim motors were a decisive factor in the choice within a company that is particularly mindful of preserving the environment.

The Bergamo waste to energy plant is a highly innovative operation, powered with WDF (Waste Derived Fuel) produced upstream from bio-drying, and refining unsorted non-recyclables solid urban waste.

The plant functions in such a way that it not only produces electricity but also recovers thermal energy, channelling the heat produced into the district heating network to the homes within the province.

To emphasise their green credentials, the purchasing department gave the green light to the Case 721F Wheel Loader for its compliance with the new Tier IV i emissions regulations.

cwmags - The Case 721F is particularly adapted for the job.    The loader works in the critical storage area where waste arrives from separate collection sources (wood, plastic, organic, packaging, etc.).

Once it has been sorted, stacked and cleared, the respective materials are loaded onto cases that are then transported and placed on special containers and sent for subsequent processing in salvaging/disposal centres. The 721F is particularly adapted for the job.

Environment friendly plant

The incinerator of Bergamo typically recovers up to 53 000 tonnes of RDF per annum, extracting 67 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 3 million kilowatt hours of heat .

The incinerator produces enough electricity to meet the demands of 25,000 households and sufficient heat for 300 medium sized apartments. At the same time annually saves about 15,000 TOE (tonnes of oil equivalent) and has avoided the emission into the atmosphere of about 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
