Winning contracts with streamlined planning, tighter bids and lower construction costs

While the global economic recovery is slower than we’d all like, there are positive signs we are headed in the right direction. According to IHS Global Insight, global growth in total construction spending will return by 2015. The report goes further to say the most attractive sub-sectors will be construction linked to the communications industry, followed by infrastructure and energy infrastructure which is expected to see the strongest rise.(“IHS Forecasts Total Global Construction Spending to Increase Three Percent in 2011”.)

In this environment, identifying areas across the project lifecycle to increase contractor competitiveness has become a top priority― and even big business. In the design/build project environment, contractors generally have the greatest amount of flexibility in managing and minimizing construction costs.

Here, contractors are looking to not only reduce construction costs but to also decrease the amount of planning time required to achieve these results. No one knows this better than Australia’s leading construction, mining and services contractor Thiess.

Industry Snapshot
• Contractor: Thiess, Australia
• Customer: Queensland Rail
• Project Summary:
Produce a winning bid and lower the construction costs for a massive train and infrastructure project.

Thiess was selected as the premier civil contractor in the massive Queensland Rail project and a central member of the project’s TrackStar Alliance. Safety, cost, and time were the primary considerations for this massive rail and infrastructure project.

Sponsored by the Queensland Government, the project involves building upon the region’s 8,000 kilometres of existing track. The plan also includes developing additional rail facilities spanning South East and Central Queensland.
