PANORAMA

BAUER Fundaciones Panamá S.A., a subsidiary of the German BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, has been contracted by a Brazilian/Spanish joint venture - Consorcio Línea Uno - to install the excavation pit walls for four of the total of eight underground stations currently planned.Panama
First underground rail line for Panama City

The capital of Panama is not only the political, economic, cultural and tourist centre of the country; with a population of some 700,000 people it is also the biggest city.

Work is currently underway to build Panama City’s first underground rail line. The infrastructure project, to install a line running some 13.5 kilometres, is aimed at reducing car and bus traffic congestion and enhancing transport links for locals and tourists alike.

BAUER Fundaciones Panamá S.A., a subsidiary of the German BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, has been contracted by a Brazilian/Spanish joint venture – Consorcio Línea Uno – to install the excavation pit walls for four of the total of eight underground stations currently planned. The work involves cutting approximately 36,000 square metres of 1 metre thick diaphragm wall at cutting depths between 25 and 30 metres. One of the stations is also planned to serve as the start shaft for the tunnel bore machine.

The subsidiary of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH began cutting work for the first station in Panama City in late June. Work on the second station started in early August. The work is being carried out by two Bauer BC 40 cutters.

Hamm HD+ 120 compactors assisted in the construction of the Maghreb Highway Algeria
1,216 km in 40 months

Hamm HD+ 120 compactors assisted in the construction of the Maghreb Highway, which crosses all of North Africa from Morocco to Libya in parallel to the relatively densely populated Mediterranean coast.

A 14 cm base course was laid on top of a 30 cm hydraulically bound support layer (HSL). Finally, a surface course with a height of 6 cm was laid. The aggregates were obtained directly from Algeria since the country has many quarries, especially in the north. However, the cement was imported from America.

This axis provides more than 50 million people with a connection to cities, international airports, harbours and major rail lines.

Algeria is responsible for the longest segment of this highway over a distance of 1,216 km. It is investing a total of USD 11 billion into the infrastructure. About 200 km of highways around the capital city of Algiers were built in the 1990s. All of the other new segments were built with three lanes in both directions.

By building a highway of this size, the Algerian government is preparing the capacity needed to handle rapid growth in vehicle traffic. In Algeria, the route passes along the north of the Tell Atlas mountain chain and traverses some high plateaus. Due to the many tunnels and inclines that were involved, this route through mountain terrain was quite challenging for the road builders.
