Editorial Comment

Technology can sometimes be such a hassle

Today, Internet and mobi le telephone access is a critical tool for virtually every manager and also many operatives. Apart from routine communications for emails and telephone calls, more and more equipment is fted with diagnostc systems and security devices that communicate via wireless technology.

I well remember the days when I had to carry a case full of adapters, crocodile clips, screwdrivers and various adapters to try and hook into a hotel’s telephone system to get a dial up connecton.

Dial-up is not really an option with today’s file loads but hotels and other suppliers treat WiFi internet access as a cash-cow - an easy way to milk the business traveller.

Interestngly, many businesses see that ofering free access actually increases business - McDonalds, Denny’s and others are a classic example.

I will only stay at hotels that ofer free WiFi access - they get my business. If enough people do the same the bigger chains such as Hilton, Sheraton, Holiday Inn, etc. will soon get the message - indeed some already have realised that free WiFi wins business.

An efcient WiFi installaton costs very litle in comparatve terms, and hotels and exhibitons centres usually have it installed for their own purposes, so it is easily opened up to beneft guests and visitors.

Connectivity essential

As we head rapidly towards 2012 and the beginning of the exhibiton season, it will be interestng to see what new technology is introduced and how companies use technology to promote their machines.

Although these exhibitons, trade shows and conferences will be promotng the use of technology, few, if any, will actually enable a free WiFi connection. Why should they - when they have a captve audience that needs access and can be used as a revenue stream?

Contractors World Magazines enable free Internet Access at Intermat

Contractors World are sponsors of the ‘cyber lounge’ at Intermat where we invite visitors to come to check their emails, log-on to the company systems, etc. - all without charge.

We may, of course, scan your visitor or exhibitor pass to ensure that you are on our mailing list - but the data will not be used for any other purpose. There is already too much spam around - we do not want to encourage or make available more.

If you are at Intermat, please visit the cyber area, and, if a reader, then please introduce yourself.
