Tromsø Airport in the north of NorwayNorway
Night work by daylight

Tromsø Airport in the north of Norway is a hub that handles many domestic connections as well as flights to and from the neighbouring countries of Sweden, Finland and Russia. The runway is exposed to a constant, highly saline wind coming from the polar sea. The surface course must be repaired periodically, as was the case most recently.

In addition to normal pavement rehabilitation, this time, the runway was also to be extended by 250 m. Contractor, Lemminkäinen Norge AS, opted for Wirtgen Group equipment - a Vögele Super 1800-2 with SprayJet Module to carry out the asphalt works. For the compaction work, Hamm DV Series compactors was used as the client, Avinor, asked for combination rollers with oscillation to be used. This technology provides the only way to achieve high-quality compaction with no imperfections – despite the constant wind and temperatures under 10°C.

The panoramic cabin is one of the biggest benefits of Hamm’s DV rollers. With its glass floor and open frame, the roller operator can see at all times whether the drums are adequately moistened with water. This helps to optimize the quality of the asphalt surface.

Work on the 2 km long runway at Tromsø Airport was carried out at night since the facility needed to stay in operation during the brief arctic summer.

However, no special site lighting was required for this project despite working at night, since the sun never sets in Tromsø from mid-May until the end of July. The midnight sun provided sufficient light around the clock.

Each night, between 22:00 and 06:00, the surface course was newly laid in a section with a length of 650 m and width of 4 m. Lemminkäinen moved onto the job site with a Super 1800-2. The paver sprays bitumen emulsion and lays the asphalt for the new surfacing in a single pass. This is a particularly quick, clean and economical method, capable of creating an optimal and durable bond between the layers. The freshly paved asphalt was compacted by four HAMM oscillating asphalt rollers.

For the contractors, this was a novel experiences as it was the first that a paver equipped with the Navitronic Plus 3D machine control system from Vögele was used in Norway.
