Putting operator skills to the test

Volvo Construction Equipment, Case and New Holland are three companies that see tangible benefits in enabling construction equipment operators to prove their skills against other operators from across Europe. Contractors World takes a look at what is involved and what the heat winners can look forward to.

Volvo Construction Equipment Operators’ Club

In October 2010, Othmar Pletzer from Hopfgarten in Austria successfully defended his Volvo Operators Club Masters title but can he make it three in a row?

The pan-European competition is on again to find the winner for 2011. With as many as 1,000 operators participating in various dealer organized heats in Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the competition goes from strength to strength. Only the top 24 heat winner will participate in the final challenge.

This year’s final event is worth the effort alone, even if the operator does not win. Volvo Construction Equipment will hold the final event in Alicante, Spain to coincide with the start of the Volvo Ocean Race. In fact, the final part of the challenge will take place in the port village where all the yachts will be assembled.

As an additional incentive, apart from the cash prize and the trophy, this year’s winner will participate on one of the yachts in a harbour yacht race - a preliminary to the start of the round the world race.

Operators have to prove their skills behind the controls of various Volvo’ machines from articulated dump trucks down to compact wheel loaders, large sized excavators down to mini excavators. All the challenges are against the clock and are designed to test the operators skill at precision handling of the machine.

Finals to take place at Alicante to coincide with the start of the Volvo Round the World Yacht Race. For instance in 2010, using a Volvo A25E articulated hauler, the operators had to complete a slalom course driving in reverse gear prior to undertaking a precision parking task, again in reverse.

Finals to take place at Alicante to coincide with the start of the Volvo Round the World Yacht Race.

Penalty seconds were added for dislodging a tennis ball placed on the top of a cone attached to the bonnet, while for the parking test, times were added or subtracted based on the distance from the gates.
