Downwell Demolition wizardry at Harry Potter film studios

Demolition and dismantling specialist, Downwell Demolition Ltd, is working its magic on a prestigious six month contract at the Warner Brothers’ Leavesden Studios, north of London, in England in part of a multi-million pound investment to provide the largest film studios in Europe.

“This is no ordinary demolition project,” Managing Director, Matt Phillips told Contractors World. “There are some typical demolition works at the old studios, which were originally part of a World War II airfield and aircraft assembly line, but some areas are being simply stripped back to the walls. In addition, an unusual for demolition contractors, we are also having to cut new access doorways into the existing brick walls as part of the rebuild that will be done by another contractor”.

The project will see the Downwell Demolition strip out and dismantle the world-famous studio buildings where the entire series of Harry Potter, and the James Bond film Goldeneye, were both filmed. This also adds to the challenge as some parts are being preserved as part of a museum and, at the time of Contractors World visiting the site, these were hidden behind tarpaulins and were definitely a ‘no go’ area. In fact, so strict is security within the studios, that no photography of the remaining exterior sets from Harry Potter and other movies is permitted

Downwell Demolition is having to use wizardry to overcome the many challenges at the demolition contractor for the Warner Bros studios in the UK
