Bridge deck panel installation from the water begins

In July 2011, the contractors started the highly challenging operaton of installing the of the main steel stfening girder from the water of the Eastern Bosphorus strait

Channel span panel No. 11 was the first component to be lifed from the water on the Nazimov Peninsula side. The 300 ton secton was delivered to the point under the installaton unit by specially equipped Grigorich carrier pontoon.

“There are challenging conditons in the sea water area. The strong currents vary in directon while the permanent waves and winds make it hard to positon the vessel. At the same tme, we have to deal with the tolerance of just 30 cm – the accuracy to which the pontoon has to be positioned within the installation site,” says Igor Filkov, Deputy Director, Maritime Shipping, USK MOST Branch in Vladivostok.

“We have experienced sailors with the company such as Valentn Sergienko, a pilot and master who has a worked for over 10 years in Arctc expeditons. In additon, I would like to express my appreciation of Vladivostok Port Master who has adjusted the rules of navigation in the Bosphorus Strait for the panel installaton period in order to avoid additonal wave exposure. “First, three tugs were used to move the carrier pontoon to the mooring area and the pontoon was then tethered by steel lines between anchors of which two anchors were cast in the water area and two anchors on the shore. This positioning solution allowed us to be in the exact place in less than one hour. I think that the tug crews and the pontoon crew did an excellent job!” A derrick crane installed on the span deck cantlever and facing toward the strait was used to lift the section that weighs 300 tonnes to the elevaton of 70 meters. Then it was secured using bolts and welding, with subsequent ftng of the installaton joint with panel No. 10.

“The operation is unique because panels that weigh about
