Simple demolition job with complications

Productvity was key for an excavator operatng on a complex demolition project in Lyon, France, where work goes on throughout the night. The excavator chosen for the job was a Hitachi ZX350LC-3 which is working in Lyon Part Dieu, in the district of La Villette, France, where it is demolishing a six-story building. Much of the work needs to take place during hours of darkness, as the site is close to tramlines and there is heavy road trafc in the area. The project is being undertaken by EBM, part of the Vinci Group, which specialises in public works. The company selected the ZX350LC-3 for its versatility, in that it can be equipped for either demol ition or earthmoving. The Zaxis medium excavator has a 21 m demol i t ion arm and i ts hydraulic system works with biolubricants, which are less damaging to the environment.

The excavator was supplied by Teramat, the Hitachi dealer which serves the Rhone Alps region

Crawler and all-terrain cranes helped build parking structure

A Mani towoc 2250 crawler crane and a Grove GMK6250L al l -terrain crane helped construct a two-storey underground parking structure at a mixed-use apartment complex in Bloomington, USA

The cranes were rented from Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul by Hanson S t r u c t u ra l P r e c a s t , t he p r e c a s t subcontractor working for general

contractor Frana Companies. The two cranes lifed and placed the precast concrete wall panels and fooring sectons. The heaviest load, a 18 m (60 f) “double T” foor secton, weighed 29,500 kg (65,000 lbs). The load-bearing walls each weighed 17,236 kg (38,000 lbs).

Tim Harty, vice president of Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul, said “The 2250 was a great ft for our jobsite. Between the sandy ground and space constraints of the below-grade site, we only had a small runway of space to assemble the crane. The crane had to be 105 f (32 m) from where we placed the concrete sectons. As a result, we needed a crane with ample reach and capacity.”

The all-terrain crane placed the precast wall sectons directly from the trucks and into positon as load-bearing walls. With the perimeter walls complete, the Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane was used to place the heavier fooring slabs and the interior walls. To ensure the trucks could access the jobsite while keeping the crane on steady ground, the 2250 was assembled with Series 3 counterweights and 64 m (210 f) of main boom.
