Volvo saves heritage structures

Volvo Constructon Equipment (Volvo CE) teamed up with Advanced Construction Technologies Ltd (ACT) to ensure the safety of two priceless heritage structures in Chennai, India.

Volvo demolition machinery was put to the test to save two famous landmark buildings flanking a structure that was being knocked down to make room for a new Metro Rail project. It’s the largest publ ic project in Tami lnadu, with an investment of 146 billion rupees ($3.20 billion).

Phase one of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) project is for about 44 km of underground and over-ground space being used for the high speed rail network. The main hub of this entre project will be at the famous Central Station, which is one of the busiest places in Chennai.

Afer careful study of the structures, ACT proposed to use a Volvo hydraulic crusher for the entre demoliton of Hotel Picnic that stood in the central station area of CMRL. This 30 m high multi-storied structure with reinforced cement concrete coves 12,000 m² of built up area. The structure was sandwiched between two famous landmark heritage structures, the Rippon Building and the Victoria Hall, both of which are more than 100 years old and made of masonry in lime mortar.

Hotel Picnic was very close to both of these heritage structures with hardly 10 m clearance on either side of the heritage buildings. Organizatons like Intach that protect heritage structures all over India, were concerned about the proposal because any vibratons from the demoliton of the hotel would almost certainly be harmful to these structures and their futures.

An EC240BLC excavator f i tted wi th a hydraul i c crusher, and an EC460BLC excavator, fted with a 26 m triple boom and a hydraulic crusher, started the demolition work and took two weeks to demolish the building.

Th i s i s the f i rst t ime a h i gh reach demolition machine of 26 m has been used in Chennai . Dust is control led by an in-built water spray system in the high reach machine. With the introducton of such safe demolition technologies, Volvo CE and ACT strongly believe that heritage structures near demoliton sites can stay safe.
