The circus comes to town, but for how much longer?

     Report by Roger Lindley, Editor

For the past 30 years or more, the construction industry has taken place on a three yearly cycle between Bauma (Munich, Germany), Intermat (Paris, France) and ConExpo (Las Vegas, USA). This year the circus comes to Paris but for how much longer?

I remember the Paris show long before it became Intermat. Prior to that, it was called Expomat and held at La Bouget airport before moving to the new exhibition centre where the current show is held.

As shows go, Intermat is one often remembered for all the wrong reasons, as it has often been the subject of some disruption by union strikes on the metro system. However, such actions do little to detract from the event which has always been well worth visiting.

Intermat is facing increased competition from other trade shows, particularly Bauma China. If the Asian show can get its act together and prove that it is truly an international exhibition, instead of an exhibition to promote sales into China, then the situation may change. Many in the industry believe that it would make much more economic sense to have a show in Europe, Asia and America, on a three yearly cycle, rather than two in Europe and on e in the USA. When the inevitable occurs, then the loser will be Intermat, which will be downgraded to a European event competing with the likes of Samoter, SMOPYC and others for premier position.

This question came up to often while meeting with companies at a very successful pre-Intermat 2012 event where editors were given forward information on what to expect at Intermat from the exhibitors.

It was not only the Intermat event organisers that were talking positively about the show. Exhibitors are also showing a remarkable interest in the event with many new machines. Of course, many of these are the result of implementation of new engine emission regulations.

This has resulted in manufacturers having to juggle with the different emission and other standards applied in Europe with those viable in Africa and Middle East where the advanced fuels and diagnostic equipment for servicing are not so readily available.
