The first tower was built within days of i t s stee l p i eces be i ng del ivered to site. Every piece is being crafted in the UK by Bolton based steel manufacturer Watson Steel, providing a real boost to UK based company.

Over half of the two hundred emp l oyees at the fac tor y are dedicated to this project and will contnue to be untl the last piece is manufactured in spring 2012.

Two terminals are well advanced

There are two terminals that will ser v i ce the Emi rates Ai r L ine, these will be known as Emirates Royal Docks (North Terminal) and Emirates North Greenwich Terminal (South Terminal).

Both terminal buildings will have two foors. The concourse (ground floor) and the platform (first floor) both of which are fully accessible and have two l i fts. As wel l as landscaping around the site of the terminals, the cabin store and the kiosk will be topped with a “Brown Roof”.

‘Brown Roofs’ are similar to ‘Green Roofs’ in that they share many of the same benefts and constructon methods, however they are designed with the overriding aim to encourage biodiversity.

The north terminal is mounted on 29 piles and the south terminal 43 piles. Both terminal are 35 m in length and primarily concrete and steel constructon.

London’s new attraction

Travelling at a height of 50 m, passengers will be given panoramic views over the Olympic Park and London as they are carried the 1,100 m over the river.. The cable car has the capacity to carry up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each directon The more than 1 km of steel cable is 500 mm diameter

Mace , the lead contractor, is building the cable car for £45 m and will operate it for the frst three years for £5.5 m. It is scheduled for completon prior to the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
