The constructon of the Emirates Air Line, the UK’s frst urban cable car, has reached another milestone with the installaton of the largest lifing capacity crawler crane in the UK. The crane will erect the South Tower of the cable car which begins this week following the constructon of the North Intermediate Tower earlier this month.

The crawler crane was put together on-site over a period of two weeks and delivered on more than 70 artculated lorries. Once fully assembled, it will have a reach of 120 m and a height of 183 m – making it the largest crawler crane in the UK.

The Emirates Air Line is set to play a vital part of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson’s regeneraton plans for this area by atractng new businesses and creatng jobs. The cable car will also be a much needed new river crossing in east London, having the capacity to carry up to 2,500 people per hour in each directon, equivalent to 30 buses per hour. The Mayor has secured £36m from Emirates to fund the connecton which will create a direct link between the O2 and ExCeL and additonal interchange between the Docklands’ Light Railway and Jubilee line.

The latest addition on site, supplied by Weldex, is a Liebherr LR 11350, which has a reach of over 120 m and a maximum lifting capacity of 1,350 tonnes - the equivalent of 193 double-decker buses or more than two A380 superjumbos.
