Doka on track for the World Cup

Doka Brasil prevailed against the competing bidders with a field-proven solution consisting of Top 50 large-area formwork and MF240 Climbing formwork. Doka on track for the World Cup

The Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht has a very special assignment to fulfil. It is responsible not only for building a brand-new 48,000 seater stadium for the Corinthians São Paulo football club, but also for temporarily enlarging it to a FIFA-mandated capacity of 68,000 seats in time for the 2014 World Cup.

Odebrecht has been working hard since May 2011 to get this prestigious project finished on schedule, at times deploying up to 1,700 personnel on the site. With the completion deadline of 31st December 2013 drawing ever nearer, the time pressure is acute, even though very many pre-cast members are being used.

One major challenge for Odebrecht is the CIP walls for the 4 cell structure core, most of which have to be cast in fair-faced concrete quality. The core is 43 m high and will house the lift shafts and stairwells of the new stadium.

Life-sized mock-up

The contractors made sure that sufficient craneage was in place right from the outset: the site crew have two Liebherr tower cranes, a telescopic crane and a mobile crane to work with. To find the optimum formwork solution for the fair-faced concrete walls, the formwork concept was put out to tender among four different suppliers.

Doka Brasil prevailed against the competing bidders with a field-proven solution consisting of Top 50 large-area formwork and MF240 Climbing formwork.

Full-time support from Doka

This climbing formwork solution from Doka is now being used to construct the walls of the 4 cell structure core in a 4 day cycle, in 968 m² casting sections. One set of timber-beam formwork measuring 242 m², with stripping corners is being used on a shaft platform in each cell. The spindle-adjustable stripping corners allow the whole formwork unit to be detached from the concrete without having to be dismantled.

The entire set of formwork is lifted in a single crane cycle up to the next casting section, where the gravity pawls of the shaft platform latch into the prepared box-outs. Simply turning the spindles on the stripping corners is all it takes to close the forms in the lift shaft again.

To ensure smooth forming operations during the start-up phase, Doka had one of its technicians directly on the site.
