Excavation pit for large-scale underground car park

The City of Ingolstadt is located on the banks of the River Danube in the heart of Bavaria and famous for its historic fortifications and home of the car manufacturer Audi. The city is undertaking several major construction projects in an exclusive location on the Schlosslände. On the site of a former foundry overlooking the Danube large-scale investments are being made.

In urban development terms, the site is in a highly desirable, prime location. Construction is taking place next to the ‘Old Town’, on land which slopes gently towards the River Danube to the south, between Ingolstadt’s New Castle to the west and opposite the Kavalier Dallwigk, one of the city‘s historic fortresses.

Several new buildings are to be constructed on this former industrial site – a Congress Center complete with five-star hotel, the new building Audi Akademie in which all educational and training departments of the Audi manufacturer are combined and a new Museum of Concrete Art and Design, to replace its current home which has become too small over the years.

The concept designs were created under the direction of Planungsgesellschaft IFG, a fully-owned subsidiary company of the City of Ingolstadt, who also act as client.

Preparatory work underway

Preparatory works for the construction of the new buildings involves a variety of specialist foundation engineering activities. These extensive foundation works were carried out between mid-March and the middle of August 2012 by BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH.

Bauer was also responsible for the pre-construction planning and design of all specialist foundation engineering works. The principal task was the construction of an excavation pit for a two-storey underground car park for the future Congress Center, complete with hotel. This required the construction of 2,000 linear metres of 900 mm diameter bored piles to depths ranging between 8 and 15 metres.

A bored pile wall was also constructed along the south side of the old foundry hall, the remains of which are to be integrated into the new Museum of Concrete Art and Design. The museum will be provided with an extensive basement.

two KR 806 anchor drills by Klemm Bohrtechnik GmbHFor the various foundation engineering works, Bauer employed three Bauer BG Series rotary drilling rigs and two KR 806 anchor drills by Klemm Bohrtechnik GmbH, for the installation of 5,000 linear metres of tie-back anchors amounting to 320 anchors ranging in lengths between 14 and 18.5 metres. Demolition works and earth moving operations were also carried out under the direction of Bauer Spezialtiefbau.

On the west side of the Kavalier Dallwigk, historic masonry had to be drilled through during pile installation. This old structure, which is one of Ingolstadt’s famous fortifications, is to be integrated into the overall design concept of this development. The brick building with its distinctive tower is to be restored as part of the construction operations and will in future be used for museum-related purposes.
