Formwork & Falsework International Vol 2 No 1

At 947 m long - the Country’s Longest Viaduct

In Durban, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, works continue on highway expansion with construction of a $14 million motorway junction, the N2-M41 Mount Edgecombe Interchange.

A challenging part of the project is construction of two viaducts, one of which will be the longest in South Africa. One viaduct will be 26 m high and 947 m long. The second, also 18 m high by only 443 m in length.

At 947 m long - the Country’s Longest Viaduct

In 2010, on the N2 motorway, another viaduct had to be constructed (see article in Contractors World) of the Megni valley in which the Italian formwork company, Pilosio supplied the formwork for all the concrete work, including the bridge deck and Enerpac provided the jacking system for the incremental bridge launching system. With this past experience it is not surprising , therefore, that the contractors chose the same two companies for this technically very challenging project.
