Roads & Bridges

Free Energy From Roads

Every now and then an idea comes along that makes a lot of sense, especially when there is so much emphasises on saving the environment and renewable energy sources.

A development by Colas and The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA Tech) lead to the development of a product/system called ‘Wattway’ which was unveiled in October 2015.

The collaboration recognized the millions of square meters of asphalt/concrete road surfaces that cover the world providing vital infrastructure links for trade an industry in all countries.

Jean-Luc Gautier, then manager of the Center for Expertise at the Colas Campus for Science and Techniques, reflected on the fact that

Roads spend 90% of their time just looking up into the sky.
When the sun shines, they are of course exposed to its rays. It’s an ideal surface area for energy applications.
