Free Energy From Roads
Every now and then an idea comes along that makes a lot of sense, especially when there is so much emphasises on saving the environment and renewable energy sources.
A development by Colas and The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA Tech) lead to the development of a product/system called ‘Wattway’ which was unveiled in October 2015.
The collaboration recognized the millions of square meters of asphalt/concrete road surfaces that cover the world providing vital infrastructure links for trade an industry in all countries.
Jean-Luc Gautier, then manager of the Center for Expertise at the Colas Campus for Science and Techniques, reflected on the fact that
Roads spend 90% of their time just looking up into the sky.
When the sun shines, they are of course exposed to its rays. It’s an ideal surface area for energy applications.
Installation of Wattway panels as part of trial studies at a French car park where the energy generated will power the ticket machines and display panels.
