Earthquake Recovery Underway
Contractors from throughout New Zealand responded rapidly to the thousands of landslips that closed roads and rail link in the south Island following the massive earthquake at the end of 2016.
The NZ Government is making good progress on many fronts to the north of Kaikoura where the main road closely follows the east coast. More machinery and crews are continuously moving on-site to begin building access tracks and removing slips.
Recent works include installing rockfall safety bunds along the bottom of the various slips.
These bunds help protect construction crews from falling rocks, enabling work to continue on the slip face while other crews travel past the site to access slips further to the north.
