The two $55 million TBMs were custom-built for the Airport Link project and this solution avoided the need for additional disruptive surface work in the Lutwyche area and, as such, not readily adaptable for use in other projects.Australia

No light at the end of the tunnel for boring machines

Deep underground on the Brisbane Airport Link project in Australia, two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), ‘Rocksy’ and ‘Sandy’, were laid to rest in July, after completing their tunnelling journeys.

The cutterheads and shields for the project’s two massive TBMs were buried underneath the tunnels they have created - a practice regularly adopted by tunnelling projects in Australia and around the world.

c

The two machines drove over 5 km of tunnel and progressed along the alignment at rates of up to 110 metres a week at maximum at depths of 55 m.. The cutterheads diameter is 12.48 m. Each machine weight 3,600 tonnes and is 195 metres long. Each machine took 12 months to build and a further 3 months to assemble at the tunnel opening.

During operation each machine require more than 20 operatives.

Metso Trellex LS-EcoMetso first to offer recyclable screening media

Metso has announced the pending introduction of the first fully recyclable modular screening media – Metso Trellex LS-Eco - in direct response to customer requests for sustainable and environmentally-friendly screening media solutions.

Based on the Metso Trellex LS rubber modular screening media systems, the steel reinforcement has been replaced with an environmentally-friendly composite material. The LS-Eco offers a wide range of health, safety and environmental benefits. Each screening media panel is up to 40% lighter than standard steel reinforced Trellex LS panels. This makes handling easier and the working environment safer. Lighter panels also help to reduce the overall stress on the entire screening installation. By comparison, Metso Trellex LS-Eco is more flexible and will reduce the effects of pegging and blinding during screening operations thereby contributing to reduced downtime and increased productivity.

LS-Eco, sized 305 x 610, is scheduled to be available in selected markets towards the end of this year. Other dimensions will be available in 2012.
