Roger Lindley, Editor of Contractors World Magazines

Roger Lindley, Editor of Contractors World Magazines
has exclusive interview with Paul Burger, General Manager of HCME

Hitachi has no reverse gear!

It is always good to get an insight into not only what companies make and distribute but looking at some of the management philosophies and ideas can be very revealing.

During Intermat 2012, Roger Lindley took the opportunity to have a candid interview with Paul Burger, General Manager responsible for Strategic Sales and, if anyone within HCME knows what makes it tick it is Paul who has, over the past 24 years, progressively worked his way to his current senior management position, having joined the company in 1988 as a data entry clerk.

Paul is very positive in his attitude that, for Hitachi Construction Manufacturing Europe (HCM) there is only one direction - forward.

Hitachi Ltd was established in 1920 although the first activities can be traced back to 1910 when the company began making five horsepower induction motors. 1924 saw the company produce its first large scale DC electric locomotive. Growth then became very rapid in many fields of electrical engineering, nuclear reactors and consumer products.

This lead to the forming in 1955 of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd as a service company. In 1970, Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. was established and In 1971 the company introduced the KH150 (right) - the world’s first fully hydraulic crawler crane and a year later in 1972, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) B.V was formed.

In 1985, the company established a capital participation in a construction machinery sales company in France (Fiat-Hitachi Excavators France S.A.). This was the forerunner to the full joint venture Fiat-Hitachi Excavators S.p.A. in Italy for local production of hydraulic excavators which was to last until 2002..
